Dana Point Harbor is now home to Lot’a Fun , a state of the art catamaran featuring artwork by Wyland on both sides of the boat. The customized graphics depict a gray whale and her baby – a concept that general manager Donna Kalez says honors the company’s origins. Kalez’s father Don Hansen founded Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching in 1971, paving the way for whale watching as gray whales migrated along the Southern California coastline.
“In many ways, our family business owes its success to the gray whale. Wyland often tells a story of his first time swimming in Laguna and encountering a gray whale. It changed his life. And the gray whale changed our lives.”

Gray Whale season starts the day after Thanksgiving, and typically runs until the end of April. January to March are the peak times for gray whales.
